Harrison (1865-1945) Papers Thee collection is comprised of business papers, and correspondence relating to John B. Harrison's boatbuilding,. fishing, packing, and canning businesses, together with additional. information gleaned from interviews conducted with his son and daughter, 1985-86.Biographical BackgroundJohn B. Harrison was one of the most well known and respected boatbuilders in Talbot County. Harrison was born on Tilghman island in 1865 and at the age of 12 went to work for his father,' a boatbuilder. At age 17 he built his first boat, the'49-foot bugeye Mary L. Cooper. By the..end -of his life he had built 18 bugeyes, including the Edn'a E'.' Lo'ckwo'od, and perhaps 200 other boats. Among these were the famous log canoes'Jay Dee and Flying,-Cloud.John Harrison was a versatile and talented man. In addition to boatbuilding, he also had a blacksmith shop and fished pound nets. At one time he operated a fish processing house on Poplar Island, and later Devil's Island. At various times on Devil's Island he also had a shucking house and tomato canning factory. The island was man made and slowly grew as a result of discarded oyster shells. Many of the buildings were damaged in the 1933 hurricane.Harrison was also a partner in a tomato cannery in Neavitt, and was frequently called upon to salvage sunken boats,John B. Harrison died in 1945, but his name is still a familiar one on Tilghman and in the county. His canoes Jay Dee and Flying Cloud are still raced today. Harrison married twice and is survived by his daughter Pauline H. Jenkins. For additional information see: The Edna E. Lockwood, Charles Kepner, CBMM, 1979 and' Chesapeake Bay Log Canoes and Bugeyes, Marion Brewington, 1963.The papers are photocopies of the originals in the possession of Mrs.,Pauline Jenkins. They refs4ct the wide range of interests of John Harrison. The boatbuilding-related papers give some:W.indication of the cost of boats and materials at the turn of the century. The cost for one unnamed bugeye is quoted as $1300. A partial list of boats built by Harrison As compiled by R. Dodds is included. There is some correspondence, bills and receipts concerning the fishing and seafood processing businesses. These included some interesting letterheads.Papers on the canning business include an exerpt from an account book and a grower's contract. 48888.0030.0000.00documentsJohn G. Earle Collection 1891-1987Range, Exa 01/01/1891 - 12/31/1987John G. Earle Collection 1891-1987<br />This collection is predominantly comprised of ships plans, including original designs and drafts made from existing ships by John G. Earle and his brother-in-law C. Lowndes Johnson. The collection also includes works by various naval architects and designers working throughout the early and middle twentieth century. In addition, the collection includes three scrapbooks comprised of newspaper clippings and other references to the architectural history of the Eastern Shore of Maryland.Biographical Background:Born in Easton, Maryland on March 14, 1901, John Goldsborough Earle expressed a love for and an interest in the vessels of the Chesapeake Bay early in life. It would be this interest that ultimately shaped his professional life, with Earle able to parlay this curiosity into the receipt of a degree in naval architecture and mechanical engineering from Lehigh University upon his graduation in 1926. After working for the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, from 1943-1946 Earle served as the special assistant to the chief engineer at the U.S. Maritime Commission in Washington D.C. Earle then moved to Moylan, Pennsylvania were he was employed by the New York based Nordberg Manufacturing Company. During this time Earle pursued the application of the diesel engine to the maritime environment, ultimately serving on the Ships' Machinery Committee of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. Earle retired in 1966 and served as a member of the Board of Governors for the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, and returned to Easton in 1979. A thorough and exhaustive researcher, Earle never ceased in his quest to study and document the indigenous water craft of the Chesapeake Bay. Earle's scholarship put him in contact with many of the twentieth century's foremost maritime historians, including Howard I. Chapelle, and Robert H. Burgess, and his work was particularly valuable to Marion V. Brewington in his study of Chesapeake Bay log canoes and bugeyes. Earle also contributed works to Yachting and Chesapeake Bay magazines. Prior to his death on May 21, 1992, Earle was presented with the Historic Preservation Award by the Historic District Commission of Talbot County for his lifelong dedication and devotion to the preservation of the Chesapeake Bay's maritime heritage.Scope and Content:The collection, spanning close to one hundred years of maritime history, is definable by two large and predominant sections and is primarily composed of 245 ships plans. Specifically, the works of C. Lowndes Johnson and those done by Earle himself highlight the collection and are accented by the accumulated works of navalarchitects in contact with both Johnson and Earle throughout the twentieth century. Both Johnson and Earle engaged in taking lines off existing vessels and in the drafting of original designs, however, the majority of Johnson's works are original in nature and include the plans for the Comet Class sailboat. Whereas the works of Earle are largely composed of tracings and sketches of the Chesapeake's indigenous watercraft, both collections present a balance between the working vessels commonly associated with the Chesapeake(bugeyes, pungys. schooners, etc.) and the lesser known sailing yachts and skiffs which also made the Chesapeake's maritime landscape distinct. The accumulated works by other designers serve to broaden the range of the collection beyond the Chesapeake and include the works of naval architects such as William P. Gardner and Owen P. Merrill who worked in New York City. The collection also contains sailmaker's plans, although mostly unidentified and unlabeled, along with scrapbooks detailing the architectural history of the Eastern Shore and a small number of governmental documents concerning Chesapeake Bay vessels which serve to enhance the ships plans portion of the collection in terms of the overall maritime heritage of the region. No image URL.View

68888.0101.0000.00papersPapers of Constance S. LarrabeeThe material in this collection was acquired in a donation from Constance Stuart Larrabee. Constance Stuart was born in England in 1914 and sailed with her parents to South Africa in the same year. She reseived her first camera, a Kodak No. 0 Box Brownie, at the age of ten, and was captivated by the medium. She studied photography in London and Munich. In 1944, she was South Africa's first woman war correspondednt serving in WWII. Her mission in Egypt was to document the acitvities of the South African Sixth Armored Division. Although her assignment was only to last six weeks, she turned it into an extended odyssey that took her to the front lines in Italy and Southern France, to areas just liberated from Axis rule, including Rome and Paris, and to war-torn London, where the menace of the V-2 rockets was ever present. Her photographs, stark, realistic, and compelling, proide a unique insight into World War II and its aftermath. Consatnce came to America in 1949 when she married Colonel Sterling Larrabee and moved to Chestertown on the Eastern Shore in 1950. She became an American citizen in 1953. Much of her Eastern Shore life centered at King's Prevention Kennel, where she bred over 600 Norwich and Norfolk terriers. Constance bred and trained not merely pets, but champions. An acknowledged expert on the breed, she co-edited Norwich Terrier USA 1936-1966 for the Norwich Terrier Club, USA. Ever concerned with her puppies' well-being, she permitted adoption only after she had carefully screened the prospective owners.Though very involved in breeding champion terriers, she also understood the importance of being involved with her community. The Chestertown Garden Club, the Humane Society of Kent County, the Chestertown Arts League, the Kent County Arts Council, and Washington College were some of the beneficiaries of her boundless energy and inspiration. In 1955 two of her photographs were selected by Edward Steichen to be included in The Family of Man exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She has since exhibited internationally and has work in leading museum collections, including the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the National Museum of African Art.[compliled from several sources in the collection by Lynne Phillips]Scope and ContentThe items in this collection are organized by subject.
